The biggest advantage of m-commerce versus traditional e-commerce (pc or laptop based connection) is that it provides Internet access to anyone, anytime and anywhere as long as they have a wireless device that can connect to internet. There are many more cell phones worldwide than there are Internet users. Likewise the number of users of smart-phones is expanding rapidly therefore making m-commerce a real promise.

Such a promising future for m-commerce stands behind Facebook’s interest in creating a mobile version of the website. Earlier this month, at Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona Chamath Palihapitiya the Vice President of User Growth, Mobile and International Expansion at Facebook announced the creation of Facebook Zero: a text only version of the popular social network designed exclusively for mobile use. What’s interesting is that Facebook Zero will provide a “lighter” version of the social network accessible from any mobile terminal by stripping out “data heavy” items like photos, videos and games, features that contributed notably to Facebook’s success.

This means even more users for Facebook. As the access to Facebook will be made easier for everyone, Facebook’s user base – which is now well surpassing 400 million – will continue to grow.
